Job Description

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate’s researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The Data Sciences & Machine Intelligence group in the Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division at PNNL seeks a Data Scientist to join the group to lead and support scientific research in data science, machine intelligence, and autonomous learning and reasoning. This is an excellent opportunity to hone and develop your scientific career in an outstanding research institution by joining an interdisciplinary research team focusing on accelerating scientific discovery. The primary emphasis of this position will be growing existing and adding new capabilities in the areas of Optimization, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and help strengthen the group’s leadership in the data science and machine intelligence fields. A successful candidate should have shown expertise in one or more of the following technical areas: design and integration of robotics systems, optimization and optimization-based decision-making, artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomous control and decision systems, model predictive control, reinforcement learning algorithms, deploying machine learning using cloud and edge computing solutions, transformer architectures for time series analysis.

The candidate will contribute to software development and applied mathematics research in robotics for scientific applications such as autonomous laboratories. The emphasis will be given to modeling, simulation, system integration, and control of heterogeneous robotics systems and multiagent systems. The successful candidate is also expected to help summarize the technical findings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. The candidate must be adept at collaborating with interdisciplinary technical teams through excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Design, develop, and implement methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data from several application domains of national interest.
  • Design robotic systems, develop and implement software to control robots, create prototypes, and work on necessary components, design test environments, and develop and deploy machine learning-based methods on edge computing platforms.
  • Apply optimization, artificial intelligence, statistics, machine learning, applied mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling knowledge to integrate and clean data, recognize patterns, address uncertainty, pose questions, and/or make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data.
  • Lead development and evaluation of predictive models and advanced algorithms for extracting maximum value from the data and exercising the ability to transfer skills across application domains.
  • Produce solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets.
  • Lead and contribute to publishing and presenting results in scientific computing journals and conferences and sponsoring agencies.
  • Mentor and train undergraduate and graduate interns.
