The Trade Desk: Senior Data Scientist, Inventory - London

Senior Data Scientist, Inventory

The Trade Desk is changing the way global brands and their agencies advertise to audiences around the world. How? With a media buying platform that helps brands deliver a more insightful and relevant ad experience for consumers –– and sets a new standard for global reach, accuracy, and transparency. We are proud of the culture we have built. We value the unique experiences and perspectives that each person brings to The Trade Desk, and we are committed to fostering inclusive spaces where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work every day.

So, if you are talented, driven, creative, and eager to join a dynamic, globally-connected team, then we want to talk!

Data scientists at The Trade Desk work closely with engineering throughout the lifecycle of the product, from ideation to productionisation and monitoring. Our data scientists are end-to-end owners. You will participate actively in all aspects of designing, researching, building, and delivering data-focused products for our clients and traders.

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join the Inventory team. In this role, you will work with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Product Managers to develop products that give advertisers access to high quality impressions across web, Connected TV, audio, and other channels. Our efforts enhance the curation and selection process by surfacing the most relevant and performant inventory choices to our users.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Use data signals from various sources within TTD as well as third party providers to define inventory quality and scale related metrics.
  • Design and analyse experiments (e.g. A/B test) to validate marketplace and inventory initiatives.
  • Research control theory and systems to improve solutions optimising advertising spend against inventory contracts.
  • Utilise time series forecasting techniques to predict advertising spend across marketplaces and inventory contracts.
  • Use modelling techniques to build recommendation systems that expand inventory targeting while improving relevance and other business outcomes.
  • Work with the product team to develop product strategy and data science research plan.
  • Develop data science prototypes and work with the engineering team to test and productionise models.
  • Provide technical guidance and feedback to junior Data Scientists.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a deep understanding of the foundations of statistics, applied mathematics, machine learning, and experimentation.
  • You are proficient in programming for data science in one or more open-source programming language and have hands-on experience developing statistical models and solutions at scale utilising open-source tools and cloud computing platforms.
  • You have a track record of owning projects end-to-end (from research to production) and partnering with a cross-functional team of data scientists, engineers, and product managers to deliver advanced analytics or models.
  • You have a keen sense of data intuition and the ability to innovate in the field of metric development, control systems, and/or statistical modeling, as evidenced by achievements like first-author publications or project successes.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

We do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start at TTD. What we care most about is that you can learn quickly and solve complex problems using the best tools for the job. However, we find that the most successful candidates typically come in with something like the following experience:

  • BS/MS with 5+ years or a PhD with 3+ years of experience working in a DS role that involves bringing products from ideation to production.
  • Experience in metric development, machine learning, statistical modeling, time series forecasting, and designing experiments in a production environment.
  • Proficient in Python.
  • Experience running heavy workloads on a distributed computing cluster, (especially EMR or Databricks), leveraging technologies like Spark to work with large datasets.
  • The ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders, making architecture recommendations, ensuring effective execution, and measuring quality of outcomes.
  • Experience in programmatic advertising and/or real-time auctions is a plus.
  • Experience with control theory is a plus.
